Bugs That Heal

Creepy, crawly leeches to help heal some patients. It’s true! Leeches — little critters the size of sunflower seeds — are safe, painless and they really work.

Leeches are bloodsuckers. Many years ago doctors used them to drain “bad blood” from sick people. Nowadays, they’re placed at the point of an injury or an amputation where they can remove congested blood to allow normal circulation to the tissues.

The bugs can also help restore circulation to grafted tissue and reattached fingers and toes. The result may be faster healing and smaller scars.

If you don’t mind the fact that they’re bugs, you may be able to appreciate that leeches are another example of Mother Nature’s ability to provide the best medicine.
