Can We Fix Physical Education

Physical education has a terrible rep. PE programs are often said to be free-play, learn-nothing courses taught by unqualified, incompetent teachers who set few standards, exert little guidance and extract little achievement. Some of children’s most devastating mental scars were cut in gym class.

Does this harsh picture really tell the truth?

FitnessLink did some investigating and found that very few schools follow the Surgeon General’s 1996 recommendation for daily physical education for all students, kindergarten through grade 12.

And regardless of how much time schools “require” students to spend in PE, what’s really happening during those hours hardly constitutes physical, let alone education.
